Princess Aiko's popularity sparks calls to change Japan's male-only succession law

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's beloved Princess Aiko is often cheered like a pop star.

Duringa visit to NagasakiwithEmperor NaruhitoandEmpress Masako, the sound of her name being screamed by well-wishers along the roads overwhelmed the cheers for her parents.

As she turns 24 on Monday, her supporters want to change Japan's male-only succession law, which prohibits Aiko, the emperor's only child, from becoming monarch.

Along with frustration that the discussion on succession rules has stalled, there's a sense of urgency. Japan's shrinking monarchy is on the brink of extinction.Naruhito's teenage nephewis the only eligible heir from the younger generation.

Experts say the female ban should be lifted before the royal family dies out, but conservative lawmakers, including Prime MinisterSanae Takaichi, oppose the change.

Aiko's popularity boosts demand for a fe male monarch

Aiko has gained admirers since debuting as an adult royal in 2021, when she impressed the public as intelligent, friendly, caring and funny.

Support for Aiko as a future monarch increased following her first solo official overseas trip to Laos in November, representing the emperor. During the six-day visit, she met with top Laotian officials, visited cultural and historical venues and met with locals.

Earlier this year, Aiko accompanied her parents to Nagasaki andOkinawa. She has followed the example set by her father, who places great importance on passing down the tragedy of WWII to younger generations.

"I have always been rooting for Princess Aiko to be crowned," said Setsuko Matsuo, an 82-year-old atomic bombing survivor who came to Nagasaki's peace park hours before Aiko and her parents' scheduled arrival in the area. "I like everything about her, especially her smile ... so comforting," she told The Associated Press at the time.

Mari Maehira, a 58-year-old office worker who waited to cheer Aiko in Nagasaki, said she has seen Aiko grow up and "now we want to see her become a future monarch."

The princess' popularity has triggered some to pressure legislators to change the law.

Cartoonist Yoshinori Kobayashi has written comic books that push for a legal change to allow Aiko to become monarch, which supporters keep sending to parliamentarians to raise awareness and get their backing for the cause.

Others have set up YouTube channels and distributed leaflets to gain public attention on the issue.

Ikuko Yamazaki, 62, has been using social media to advocate for the succession of the emperor's first child regardless of gender. She says not having Aiko as a successor and the insistence on male-only monarchs will cause the monarchy to die out.

"The succession system conveys the Japanese mindset regarding gender issues," Yamazaki said. "I expect having a female monarch would dramatically improve women's status in Japan."

Aiko's upbringing

The popular princess was born on Dec. 1, 2001.

Soon after giving birth to Aiko, her mother, Harvard-educated former diplomat Masako, developed a stress-induced mental condition, apparently due to criticism for not producing a male heir, from which she is still recovering.

Aiko was known as a bright child who, as a sumo fan, memorized wrestlers' full names.

However, she also had faced difficulties: As an elementary school girl, she briefly missed classes because of bullying. As a teenager, she appeared extremely thin and missed classes for a month.

In 2024, Aiko graduated from Gakushuin University, where her father and many other royals studied. She has since participated in her official duties and palace rituals while also working at the Red Cross Society. On weekends, she enjoys taking walks with her parents and playing volleyball, tennis and badminton with palace officials.

Japan's monarchy is at a 'critical state'

The 1947 Imperial House Law only allows male-line succession and forces female royals who marry commoners to lose their royal status.

The rapidly dwindling Imperial Family has 16 members, down from 30 three decades ago. All are adults.

Naruhito has only two potential younger male heirs, his 60-year-old younger brother, Crown Prince Akishino, and Akishino's 19-year-old son, Prince Hisahito. Prince Hitachi, former EmperorAkihito'syounger brother and third in line to the throne, is 90.

Akishino acknowledged the aging and shrinking royal population, "but nothing can be done under the current system."

"I think all we can do right now is to scale back our official duties," he told reporters ahead of his 60th birthday Sunday.

Last year, the crown prince noted that royal members are "human beings" whose lives are affected by the discussion, a nuanced but rare comment. He has seen no change, though palace officials have sincerely taken his remark, Akishino said Sunday.

Aiko had also previously said she is aware of the declining royal population, but could not comment on the system. "Under the circumstances, I hope to sincerely serve every official duty and help the emperor and the empress, as well as other members of the Imperial Family."

The shortage of male successors is a serious worry for the monarchy, which some historians say has lasted for 1,500 years. It's also a reflection of Japan's broader problem of a rapidly aging and shrinking population.

"I think the situation is already critical," said Hideya Kawanishi, a Nagoya University professor and expert on monarchy. Its future is totally up to Hisahito and his potential wife's ability to produce a male offspring. "Who wants to marry him? If anyone does, she would endure enormous pressure to produce a male heir while performing official duties at a superhuman capacity."

Hisahito must carry the burden and the Imperial Family's fate by himself, former Imperial Household Agency chief Shingo Haketa said in a Yomiuri newspaper article this year. "The fundamental question is not whether to allow a male or female succession line but how to save the monarchy."

Japan's male-only succession system is relatively new

Japan traditionally had male emperors, but there have also been eight female monarchs. The last was Gosakuramachi, who ruled from 1762 to 1770.

The male-only succession rule became law in 1889 and was carried over to the postwar 1947 Imperial House Law.

Experts say the system had only previously worked with the help of concubines who, until about 100 years ago, produced half of the past emperors.

The government proposed allowing a female monarch in 2005, but Hisahito's birth allowed nationalists to scrap the proposal.

The unfruitful search for a male successor

In 2022, a largely conservative expert panel called on the government to maintain its male-line succession while allowing female members of the family to keep their royal status after marriage and continue their official duties. The conservatives also proposed adopting male descendants from defunct distant branches of the royal family to continue the male lineage, an idea seen as unrealistic.

The United Nations women's rights committee in Geneva urged the Japanese government last year to allow a female emperor, saying that not doing so hindered gender equality in Japan.

Japan dismissed the report as "regrettable" and "inappropriate," saying the imperial succession is a matter of fundamental national identity.

"Though it's not spelled out, what they're saying is clearly in favor of male superiority. That's their ideal society," Kawanishi, the professor, said.

U.S. and Ukrainian officials hold 'very productive' meeting in Florida

Top U.S. officials and a Ukrainian delegation met in Florida on Sunday for the latest round of discussions on a plan to end the war between Russia and Ukraine — talks both sides described positively but about which they provided no details and took no questions.

"Much work remains, but today was, again, a very productive and useful session where I think additional progress was made," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in short remarks to reporters after the meeting.

Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff met with a Ukrainian delegation headed by Rustem Umerov, secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council. Also present was President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, who does not hold an official U.S. government position but serves as an unofficial adviser.

Rubio emphasized wanting to set up Ukraine for "prosperity." He did not delve into specifics, nor did he take questions from reporters.

"As I told you earlier this morning, our goal here is to end the war, but it's more than just to end the war," he said. "We don't just want to end the war; we also want to help Ukraine be safe forever, so never again will they face another invasion, and equally importantly, we want them to enter an age of true prosperity."

Rubio added that the discussions were "not just about the terms that ends fighting, it's about also the terms that set up Ukraine for long-term prosperity."

Umerov expressed gratitude to the U.S. and echoed Rubio's sentiments, saying, "Our objective is a prosperous, strong Ukraine."

"We discussed all the important matters that are important for Ukraine, for Ukrainian people, and U.S. was super supportive," he added, going on to characterize the meeting as "productive" and "successful."

U.S. and Ukrainian officials discussed the details of a potential peace framework this month in Geneva. Earlier,Trump tried to pressureUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to accept a proposal that would have given Russia more Ukrainian land beyond what it currently controlled.

Trump told reporters Sunday aboard Air Force One that he spoke with Rubio and Witkoff after the meeting, saying, "They're doing well."

"Ukraine's got some difficult little problems," he said, adding that he believed both countries wanted the war to end. He clarified to a reporter that the "problems" was a reference to a corruption scandal.

Zelenskyy's chief of staff,Andriy Yermak, a top negotiator in peace talks, resigned Friday following an anti-corruption raid on his home.

Zelenskyysaid on Xafter the meeting that Umerov reported information from Sunday's talks, but he did not disclose details.

"It is important that the talks have a constructive dynamic and that all issues were discussed openly and with a clear focus on ensuring Ukraine's sovereignty and national interests," he said, going on to thank Trump and the administration.

Ukraine has pushed for any agreement to end the war to include future security guarantees, while Moscow has pushed for Ukrainian land to be ceded to Russia and called for Ukraine not to be allowed to join NATO.

Witkoff is expected to travel to Moscow in the coming days. Zelenskyy is expectedto meet with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, according to France 24. Trump alsosaid on Truth Sociallast week that Army SecretaryDan Driscollwould meet with Ukrainians while Witkoff would meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine started in 2022 and has dragged on despite the Trump administration's efforts, which have included a controversial red carpet welcome for Putin in Alaska over the summer.

Kennedy Davenport, the belovedDrag Racelegend, pageant powerhouse, and eternal Dancing Diva of Texas, is stepping into a new spotlight with the premiere ofThe Kennedy Davenport Center Honors, debuting exclusively onWOW Presents Pluson December 7. Blending glamour, heart, and Kennedy's signature sharp wit, the special reimagines the awards-show genre through a fabulously queer lens only she could deliver.

Promising "a celebration of queer excellence, where we honor those who have achieved greatness and gotten on my last nerve," Kennedy leads viewers through a whirlwind of tongue-in-cheek categories designed to highlight her fellow queens' standout moments – whether inspiring, chaotic, or just plain irritating. Honors include the Eyeroll Award, The Struggle Is Real Award, the MeMe Award, and the Proud Drag Mother Award: When Your Daughter Has a Higher Booking Fee, bestowed upon icons like Acacia Forgot, Bosco, Ginger Minj, Jorgeous, Latrice Royale, Mistress Isabelle Brooks, Nicole Paige Brooks, and Sapphira Cristál.

With her trademark charm and unmatchable performance legacy, Kennedy opens up about the creation of this new format, the queens who inspired each category, and her most unforgettableDrag Racemoments. In true Davenport fashion, it's heartfelt, hilarious, and just a little shady – the perfect tribute to the artistry, community, and chaos of drag.

I just have to say I saw you in the Las Vegas show and I thought you were amazing…but we're here to talk about the only Kennedy Center Honors that I care to watch, which are the Kennedy Davenport Center Honors. How did you envision this show and how did you make it your own?

Well, you know, anything that I choose to be a part of, I have to make it my own in order to be comfortable, in order to be myself so when the pitch came to me about it, my mind immediately got to racing and anticipating like, what could it possibly be? But once we finally put our heads together, it was like, okay, I'm going all out. I mean, when you have the opportunity to just really be yourself and to let your hair down and just talk shit, I mean, it's the best moment.

You describe the special as "a celebration of queer excellence… and those who've gotten on your last nerve." How did you balance heartfelt appreciation with playful shade?

I think anybody that knows me and gets to know me – and that includes my fan base – to know that everything I say is out of love. I don't say things to tear people down or, you know, even if I had a harsh critique on somebody, I always have a solution. I offer my help, I offer my assistance, I even offer my closet. I don't just read and just leave it hanging. I'm going to read and then turn around and be like, let me help you with this, so there is a healthy balance. I'm like your girlfriend or your sister or your auntie who will tell you the truth but says it in love and it'll be somewhat hilarious. It's like in the midst of the read, there is something like I love that bitch. She makes me sick. There's a healthy balance when you live the life of treating people how you want to be treated.

Can you walk us through the process of creating some of the categories, and which category made you laugh the hardest?

I definitely had help creating the categories. No shade, you know it takes a village and it takes the teamwork to make the dream work. So, when some of the categories were presented to me, I just fell out. World of Wonder…how can I say it? They know me, you know, like the back of my hand. So, when they came up with these crazy awards, I was like, I love them all. When you have those types of moments, you have no choice but to fall in line because it just felt right. I liked them all. Oh, my goodness. I love "So Fuck My Drag" and, you know, a lot of them could have that, you know? That's the only one that really pops into mind. But I really liked all of them and you'll see that I really poured myself into every category.

Fans still cite so many iconic Kennedy moments from "I'm so excited" to your legendary dance numbers. How did yourDrag Racejourney influence this new special?

I thinkDrag Racejust opened the door for my talents to be seen, you know, and because my talents were seen, I believe RuPaul and World of Wonder got to really see that, hey Kennedy is really, really loved here and the work I put in off screen with Drag Race Live and doing other things allowed me and afforded me the opportunity to have my own show.

Photo courtesy of World of Wonder

Looking back, is there an achievement or a moment from Drag Race that you would give yourself an award for?

Losing gracefully. I'm just saying Lord, I had a lot of great moments and I really believed that the reward is winning – mainly my improv challenges because I take pride in that and the reward was actually winning and being recognized for not just being a pageant queen but being an all-around entertainer.

You've inspired countless performers, obviously, what does honoring the next generation of drag artists mean to you?

It means a lot to me because they are the ones who are carrying the torch and it is their job to carry the legacy. I've carried the legacy of the people that have gone before me and now it's their job to do the same but they have to be in tune with that. They have to be willing to do that. So, it's very important to me, first of all, and it means a lot to pass down the history of drag and entertainment.

You're spotlighting queens like Latrice Royale, Jorgeous, Ginger Minj, and Sapphira Cristál. How did you choose which queens to honor and which categories fit them best?

I picked them. I mean, you kind of pick them through relationships, like the relationship that you build with the queens, and that's how you know that this [category] will fit them perfectly. I can't pick somebody that I don't really have a rapport or relationship with, you know?

It's also about being funny. And I may not even know them like that, but I may see some of their work, or I may see some stupid shit that they did and just call 'em out on it and, you know, it's still all in love.

I know you've got the showPageant Queenscoming up, which I don't know the outcome of but I'm rooting for you. In addition to that, what else do you have on the horizon? Are there any other things that we can get excited about coming from you?

Ooh. Thanksgiving. You know, I make a feast, honey. Oh, my goodness. You know, I cook the house down. But, outside ofPageant Queens, nothing really. Things really slow down towards the end of the year. I'm hoping to still stay booked but kind of take a little break, because the bills don't take a break! But I'm just hoping to work enough to be able to relax a bit before the new year starts, butPageant Queensis the biggest thing that's going on right now…outside of my own show. I mean, we had such a good time on set and I'm ready for season two.

Just weeks after revealing her dramaticweight loss,Amy Schumerhas once again ignited a heated online debate over her health.

The 44-year-old actress and comedian, who has openly discussed using weight lossmedication, sparkedcontroversyin a recent at-home photoshoot with her 6-year-old son.

Fans criticized her harshly, accusing her ofhypocrisyafter years of advocating body positivity.

"And just like that, the body positivity movement d**d," expressed one social media user.

Amy Schumer has reportedly shed around 40 pounds with the help of weight-loss medication as of late 2025 and appears slimmer by the day

On Saturday, November 29, Amy Schumer shared a carousel of images of herself posing in a yellow minidress on Instagram.

The photos, taken by her makeup artist Gita Bass, appear to have been captured on the dimly lit staircase of her home.

In the images, theI Feel Prettystar posed in a dainty Valentino dress featuring thin spaghetti straps, complete with bows and ruffle detailing along the hem of the mini skirt.

What started as asolo photoshootquickly turned playful when her son, Gene David, photobombed the third picture.

Though his face was partially cropped, his cheeky laugh was still visible as Amy struck an elegant pose on the stairs, giving him a joking side-eye.

Perfectly capturing her son's playfulness, Schumer wrote in the caption, "Trying to go to the party but someone won't go to bed."

Moments later, she followed up with a second post showing Gene running up the stairs as she posed with one hand on the banister, staring straight into the camera.

But the images failed to impress her audience, as many criticized her for publicly "trying to normalize O**mpic."

One user commented, "Nothing stunning about taking a med to lose weight if you're already a healthy person."

Another wrote, "The only thing I don't care for are these celebrities who tell you they love their body as it is and then slim down to societal standards. Then they say it was for health, which OK, but the amount that they lose far surpasses the'health' reasons excuse."

The same user added, "It makes the message they were giving in the past a total facade that they really never believed in which makes the people who looked up to them questioning themselves."

Many netizens even nitpicked her extreme weight loss to be making her look like "a kid."

"That's when she was like 16 people," another joked, while a second person remarked, "The kid yells O**mpic!!"

Some commenters even shifted their attention to the staircase and the brown carpet covering it, insisting the space looked outdated and in need of a refresh.

"My goodness! I would not have recognized her… Where did she disappear to?" expressed one concerned fan

"Female carpenter here… she should let me redo her stairs. They look like they need an update."

Amid the flood of criticism, a handful of supporters stepped in, arguing that Amy's weight loss journey, and her reliance on medication, might be necessary given her health history.

Schumer haspreviously been diagnosedwith exogenous Cushing's syndrome, a condition triggered by the high-dose steroid injections she received after her son's c-section birth to treat scarring.

She also battles long-term endometriosis, a painful disorder where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus.

In 2021, to find relief from the pain, had her uterus and appendix removed in September 2021.

TheTrainwreckstar has also been open about her weight-loss journey and herreliance on medicationslike O**mpic and Mounjaro, not for aesthetic reasons, she has emphasized, but to manage her weight and ease symptoms related to perimenopause.

Just last month, she came under fire for deleting all her old photos and sharing new images showcasing her slimmer physique in a red mini dress.

The move sparked backlash, with critics accusing her of trying to erase her "old self."

The online chatter grew so intense that Schumer addressed the controversy directly, writing, "I didn't delete my old photos because they were pre me losing weight."

"I'm proud of how I've looked always. I have been working to be pain free and I finally am. My endometriosis is better. Myback is healing. I no longer have Cushing syndrome so my face went back to normal."

She continued, "I didn't purposely go on a weight loss journey… But my focus has been on health. I'm sure my weight will always fluctuate. I'm a perimenopausal woman on hrt meds.

One hundred days ago today, the deadliest December tropical storm came ashore in Florida.

This late-season tropical storm made landfall early on December 1, 1925, with winds of 65 mph near Fort Myers as a system that was losing tropical characteristics.

Strong offshore winds blew the water out of parts of Tampa Bay in advance of the storm's landfall. The reverse was true in Jacksonville, where feet of storm surge caused damage up to100 feet inland, which was incorrectly considered safe from the sea at the time. The damage there totaled $18 million (2025 USD).

The storm brought 15 inches of rain to Miami and downed power, telephone and telegraph lines in the Tampa Bay area.Severe citrus crops damageamounted to more than $11 million in 2025 USD.

At least five vessels were fatally sunk by the storm, including the American S. S. Cotopaxi, which was moving from Charleston to Cuba with a crew of 30 aboard. All were lost off the Southeast coast. The ship was found off the coast of St. Augustine in 2020.

NOAA

After moving away from Florida, the storm strengthened to 90 mph off the coast of the Carolinas as a hurricane-strength non-tropical low pressure system.

It then made a second landfall in North Carolina between Wilmington and Cape Hatteras with a pressure of 980 mb and minimal hurricane-force winds. The storm finally made an eastward turn into the Atlantic and likely dissipated.

All told, 73 people were killed by the storm, more than 50 of which were offshore. This makes it also the deadliest tropical storm that didn't become a hurricane.

While this system was originally considered a hurricane,a 2011 reanalysisof the hurricane seasons in the 1920s found no evidence that it reached hurricane status.

Prior to this change, it was the deadliest December hurricane in U.S. history.

The 1925 Atlantic Hurricane Season was one of the least active in recorded history.
