Ted Turner, the media tycoon who founded CNN and led an empire that also included cable channels TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movies as well as the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks, died Wednesday, his company Turner Enterprisessaid in a statement. He was 87.

The company said Turner died peacefully surrounded by his family after a long battle with Lewy body dementia, a progressive brain disorder that herevealed he was fightingin 2018. A spokesperson confirmed to CBS News that Turner died in Lamont, Florida, where he owned a vast estate east of the state capital of Tallahassee. CNNfirst reportedTurner's death.

"Ted was an intensely involved and committed leader, intrepid, fearless and always willing to back a hunch and trust his own judgement," CNN Chairman and CEO Mark Thompsonsaid in a statement. "He was and always will be the presiding spirit of CNN. Ted is the giant on whose shoulders we stand, and we will all take a moment today to recognize him and his impact on our lives and the world."

President Trump reacted to Turner's deathon social media, calling him "one of the Greats of Broadcast History, and a friend of mine." In the same post, Mr. Trump also criticized the stewardship of CNN, a frequent target of the president's ire, after Turner sold the news outlet.

Turner was never a man to shy away from a challenge — on land or sea.

He was the skipper who brought theAmerica's Cupyachting trophy back to the U.S. in 1977. He devoted hundreds of thousands of acres of land to save theAmerican bison. He owned the Atlanta Hawks for 19 years and the Atlanta Braves for 20, during which time the Braves won the 1995 World Series. And in 1980, he changed the way we all consumed news with the launch of CNN, the first 24-hour cable news network.

"I'm a lot of different people, if you don't know that by now," Turner told CBS' "60 Minutes" in 1979. "I'm a multifaceted person. I've got a lot of different personalities. You ought to see me at midnight on a full moon."

He was a hard-drinking, cigar-smoking adventurer — with deep pockets.

"I get thousands, millions and billions mixed up," Turner said during a 2008"60 Minutes" interview. He was debating with Morley Safer whether he had lost nearly a million dollars a day or $10 million a day for two and a half years as the largest individual shareholder of AOL Time Warner. (It was the latter.) Then the corporate parent of what had been Turner's empire, the media giant washit hardwhen the dot-com bubble burst in the early 2000s.

Turner was also known for making off-color remarks, earning him numerous nicknames, including the Mouth From The South and Captain Outrageous. He was, for some, as unlikable as he was invincible.

But in 2018, he disclosed to "CBS Sunday Morning" senior contributor Ted Koppel he was fighting Lewy body dementia.

"It's a mild case of what people have as Alzheimer's," Turner told Koppel. "It's similar to that, but not nearly as bad."

Turner married three times, including his decadelong marriage to actor and activistJane Fondafrom 1991 to 2001. In 2012, Turnertold CNNthat Fonda was probably the great love of his life, he hadn't gotten over her and he doubted he ever would.

"When you love somebody, and you really love 'em, you never stop loving 'em," he said.

In a lengthy post onInstagram, Fonda on Wednesday wrote that Turner "swept into my life, a gloriously handsome, deeply romantic, swashbuckling pirate and I've never been the same."

"Ted Turner helped me believe in myself," she wrote. "He gave me confidence. I think I did the same for him, but that's what women are raised to do. Men like Ted aren't supposed to express need and vulnerability. That was Ted's greatest strength, I believe."

Fonda wrote of Turner that he "had a big life, a brilliant mind and a soaring sense of humor," and said he "taught me more than any other person or school classes," praising his business acumen along with both his competitive and loving nature.

"I loved Ted with all my heart," she added. "I see him in heaven now with all the wildlife he helped bring back from extinction ... they're all gathered at the pearly gates applauding and thanking him for saving their species."

Turner's legacy will always be paired with CNN, and yet the gift he seemed most proud of was the natural habitats he saved by buying and protecting more wild acreage than almost anyone in the U.S.

It's tempting to call him a master of his domain, but he'd prefer caretaker. We don't own anything, he said, we just borrow it for a while.

Key Points

  • Bryan Freedman says that the actor is "feeling pretty good."

  • Baldoni and Lively's representatives previously issued a joint statement saying, "It Ends With Us is a source of pride to all of us who worked to bring it to life."

Justin Baldoni's lawyer says the actor-director is"feeling pretty good"in the wake of the resolution of hishighly publicized legal battleagainst hisIt Ends With UscostarBlake Lively.

"It was a huge victory," attorney Bryan Freedmansaid onTMZ Liveof the recent settlement. "It was an incredible opportunity, and I don't think you pass up an incredible opportunity,"

Entertainment Weeklyhas reached out to Freedman for comment.

Freedman's remarks come after representatives for Baldoni's Wayfarer Studios and for Lively jointly announced that they'dreached a settlementahead of an impending trial.

"The end product — the movieIt Ends With Us— is a source of pride to all of us who worked to bring it to life," the parties said in a statement. "Raising awareness, and making a meaningful impact in the lives of domestic violence survivors — and all survivors — is a goal that we stand behind. We acknowledge the process presented challenges and recognize concerns raised by Ms. Lively deserved to be heard."

They added, "We remain firmly committed to workplaces free of improprieties and unproductive environments. It is our sincere hope that this brings closure and allows all involved to move forward constructively and in peace, including a respectful environment online."

The bitter saga has been in public view for nearly two years. At first, rumors swirled of a feud between Lively and Baldoni as the duo didn't promote their film together, despite Baldoni serving as the director and onscreen love interest to Lively. In December 2024, Livelyfiled a complaintagainst him with the California Civil Rights Department alleging sexual harassment and his coordination of a smear campaign.

In her complaint, Lively alleged that Baldoni engaged in "invasive, unprofessional, and sexually inappropriate behavior” and claimed that he hired a crisis relations firm ahead of the movie's premiere to facilitate a "sophisticated, coordinated, and well-financed retaliation plan" against her. Baldoni's attorney described Lively's allegations as "completely false, outrageous, and intentionally salacious."

Lively would formally sue Baldoni in New York federal court on New Year's Eve. Heresponded by filing a countersuit againstLively and her, husbandRyan Reynolds, in January 2025, demanding $400 million in damages and accusing them of defamation, civil extortion, breach of contract, and other offenses. Baldoni's lawsuit wasthrown out by a judge in June.

Baldoni and Lively were on course for a trial this month that would have focused on her claims of breach of contract, retaliation in violation of the California Fair Employment and Housing Act, and aiding and abetting in retaliation in violation of FEHA. Judge Lewis Liman recentlydismissed 10 of Lively's 13 claims, including allegations of sexual harassment, defamation, and conspiracy against Baldoni.

Freedman argues that Baldoni "technically" never settled a case, rather that he "won" when the judge gave the summary judgment that excluded the aforementioned accusations.

"He could breathe again,"the lawyer saidof his client's reaction. "To be accused of sexual harassment on such a public level is devastating. What he went through, I get emotional speaking about it because he's such a great human being and stands for everything that is good about women and supporting women."

Despite all the offscreen drama,It Ends With Uswas a commercial success, grossing $351 million at the worldwide box office on a reported $25 million budget. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Colleen Hoover. In most circumstances, the film's financial boom would make a sequel a guarantee, but Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios hold the rights to the follow up novel,It Starts With Us.

WATCH: Clint Hurtt pushed Eagles to draft Nigerian prospect Uar Bernard

ThePhiladelphia Eaglesrecently gave fans another peek behind the curtain of draft weekend, and honestly, one moment involving Clint Hurtt and a conversation aboutUar Bernardimmediately jumped off the screen. They're called 'passion meetings'. One Day 3 of every NFL draft, Howie Roseman really digs into who his players and coaches are eyeing. The brain trust is allowed to speak freely in a last-ditch effort to sell someone they're sold on.

USA TODAY

Philadelphia released behind-the-scenes footage from its draft process. Coach Hurtt's pitch for Bernard wasn't flashy. It wasn’t loud, but it was revealing. If you're curious why Bernard was worth investing draft capital in, look no further.

If Eagles fans were wondering how highly the coaching staff viewed the international prospect, the answer suddenly feels much clearer. Hurtt sounded fully convinced, and that should be good enough to sway everyone else.

The Eagles' defensive line coach has certainly found some upside

Bernardisn’t a typical roster addition. The Eagles recently announced that they have already used their International Player Pathway exemption on him, which essentially gives Philadelphia an extra roster spot during training camp and preseason.

Teams don’t typically draft prospects who have never played the game, and if they do, they won't casually use international player protections. They reserve it for players they genuinely believe are worth developing. Hurtt’s comments only reinforced that a belief has been invested in Bernard. The veteran defensive coach didn’t sound like someone discussing a camp body. He sounded like someone outlining traits, upside, and long-term potential, and honestly, that’s what makes clips like this fascinating.

Coach Hurtt's endorsement doesn't guarantee success, of course. Developmental prospects remain exactly that. They're developmental. Still, when respected defensive voices inside the building begin publicly and privately pushing for a player, it usually means something caught their attention long before fans ever learned the name.

Uar Bernard still has a long road ahead before securing a permanent NFL role, but after hearing his position coach explain why the Eagles wanted him so badly, it suddenly feels much easier to understand why Philadelphia appears determined to give him every opportunity to stick around. Buckle up. Things are only going to get more interesting.

"You can wear them to dinner, you can wear them as coverups, you can dress them up, down—for me, a linen pant is so essential to my summer wardrobe."

Paired with her linen, Miller is saying "yea" to jelly sandals, polka dots, micro bikinis and body glitter. "Last year, I went on an Old Navy deep-dive for their jelly sandals," shares Miller. "They came in red, black, clear and even a blue shade. I bought every single pair."

Worked a security job with my father.  A “gentleman” who definitely did not belong in the restricted area wanted to get past our security check point.  When we denied him entrance, he got pissed and asked/yelled, “do you know who I am?!?!”Without missing a beat and with an Oscar worthy performance of “concerned bystander”, my father says, “why?  Have you forgotten?  Would you like me to call an ambulance?”I followed my father’s lead and played it straight faced but I really struggled to hold in my laughter!

I was the youngest of 3 girls, and my older sisters teased me relentlessly. This will get buried, but there was a famous court case in which Wlliam F Buckley was called as an expert witness for a court case. Upon cross-examination, the rival lawyer waved a dictionary in the air, saying "have you ever even read a dictionary, sir!?"To which Buckley replied, accurately, that he had written the foreword to the very dictionary the lawyer was holding.

Journalist: What do you think of Western civilization?Gandhi: I think it would be a good idea.

At work. The Stones song "Beast of Burden" is playing overhead. My female coworker is singing along with the "pretty pretty girls" part, and she says "Pretty pretty girls...hey did you guys know, this song's about me?"Instantly my buddy Mike: "Which one are you, a beast or a burden?".

Me and my husband had been messing around telling "that's what she said" jokes and our 11 year old came on the room and asked why we were laughing so much. I told her that it was nothing, just an adult joke, and she replied "you're an adult joke", ngl it still hurts 4 years later.

Comedian said to me ( front row) “you’re pretty funny aren’t you mate” I replied “I figured one of us should be”.

I had one that I was proud of 20-some years later. One time at the beach some young women walked by us in bikinis and my wife said "I'll never look like that again". To which I replied "neither will they".

When I was young at a club -1988, I asked a girl if she wanted to dance. She said “I don’t want to dance with you!”I said, “Why are you being so choosy, I’m not.” And I walked away. She followed me back to my table and asked if I would dance with her now.

My oldest son, when he was about 6 years old. I had made some sort of dad joke and followed it up with “I’m embarrassing you, aren’t I?”That witty little guy responded “no, you’re embarrassing yourself”.He’s 14 now and I still haven’t recovered, haha.

One of my dad's friends was a legendary wit and this story was told at his funeral.John was telling a drunken tale at a grownup party that involved him saying something like "...and then we snuck away to..."His wife, for some reason, interrupted his story for a quick grammar correction, "It's not 'snuck', John, it's 'sneaked'.Without missing a beat John said, "Well, I'll be feaked."Everyone cracked up. Not a bad way to be remembered!

On the NYC subway a guy with bad BO pushed through the crowded car holding up a sign saying “Jesus is Coming”. As his smelly underarm passed inches away from a lady’s face she yelled out “Is he bringing SOAP???”.

I pulled up to the local bar after buying a new car and a guy said "must be nice having daddy's money" and I responded "it is, but please stop calling me daddy.".

Was in fifth grade and the class was lining up to head to the cafeteria for lunch. The boy in front of me turned around to face me, stared for a couple seconds, then sneered and asked why I was growing a mustache if I was a girl. I am proud of myself to this day for not missing a beat before asking him why he couldn't grow one if he was a boy.

When I was about to have my first child, one of my buddies made a joke that I look like the type of guy to kiss my kids on the lips.I said "...and you look like the type of guy to kiss my kids on the lips."He recently went no beard, just a mustache, so it landed well.

Overheard a comment in a bar between people I worked with."Well that's the first time I've ever been insulted by a Welshman""Really? You should get out more".

Excuse me for talking while you’re interrupting.

Cycling to school with my friend once aged about 11 or 12 we passed three girls, all about the same age, trying to embarrass another of the girls one shouted to my friend, "she fancies you" to which quick as a flash he replied "I don't blame her".he's a millionaire now.

My husband was in the closet, checking for suspected bugs, he found some very tiny onesHim: "I think they could be mites, but I'm not sure"Me: "So they're maybies, then"He didn't find it as funny as I did.

I'm a bus driver, and one of our drivers has a heavy german accent. One day, a hispanic child missed their stop, but the driver couldn't speak the language.
