Yahoo Sports Staff Updated Tue, October 13, 2026 at 8:18 PM UTC About Our Ads Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Another exciting week of NFL action is in the books, capped off with Monday night's back-and-forth thriller for the ages between the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams. Josh Allen and the Bills walked away with a 37-34 victory in overtime for the first OT victory of Allen's career, while Sean McVay & Co. now sit at 2-3 after entering the year as Super Bowl favorites.
Gaffes on special teams defined the Rams' stunning loss, which should have been headlined by a historic night for MVP Matthew Stafford, who became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for 150 touchdowns with two different teams . Rams kicker Harrison Mevin's time with the team has reportedly come to an end in the aftermath of that loss , missing two field goals, including what should have been the game-winner in overtime, blocked by Bills edge rusher Greg Rousseau.
There are several players that could return to action next week worthy of monitoring. Bears quarterback Caleb Williams appears on track to make a potential return from a hamstring injury in Week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons. It remains to be seen if the Falcons will have their own starting quarterback, however, after Michael Penix Jr. suffered a rib injury on "Sunday Night Football."
One player will also look to make his debut in a new uniform this week, after Texans head coach Demeco Ryans confirmed with reporters that the team traded for WR Marvin Harrison Jr. in a deal with the Arizona Cardinals. The former first-round pick now gets a fresh start with his college quarterback, C.J. Stroud, as he looks to rekindle his spark on offense.

The NFL has suspended Chicago Bears defensive end Montez Sweat for two games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
The league announced the suspension on Tuesday. It did not provide details on what Sweat allegedly did to violate the policy. The Bears have upcoming games against the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots in Weeks 6 and 7.
Sweat is a former Pro Bowler who's in his fourth season with the Bears since joining the team via a midseason trade from the Washington Commanders in 2023. He led the Bears in sacks with 10 in 2025.
The Jacksonville Jaguars will have an actual long snapper for their upcoming game against the Houston Texans in London.
Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport , the Jaguars have signed veteran long snapper Jacob Bobenmoyer following an injury to All-Pro Ross Matiscik in Sunday's win over the Philadelphia Eagles, also in London.
With Matiscik injured, the Jaguars leaned on defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton for long snaps against Philadelphia. He struggled at times, but got the job done on Cam Little's 57-yard game-winning field goal as time expired.
New England Patriots left tackle Will Campbell will miss some time with an MCL sprain in his right knee, according to a Tuesday report from ESPN .
Campbell's setback reportedly isn't believed to be as severe as the Grade 3 torn MCL he sustained in the same knee last November when he was a rookie.
Back then, he had to go on injured reserve and wasn't himself upon returning, as evidenced by his struggles down the stretch, most notably during the Pats' Super Bowl defeat to the Seattle Seahawks.
Campbell's new injury took place in the second quarter of New England's Week 5 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. A Raiders defender tackled running back Rhamondre Stevenson into Campbell's leg.
Rookie Caleb Lomu replaced Campbell mid-game and could continue to fill in for Campbell during his expected absence. The Patriots selected Lomu out of Utah with the 28th overall pick in this year's draft.
New England will host the New York Jets on Sunday.
The NFL is shifting gears on defensive tackle Zxavian Harris. After initially ruling Harris would not be eligible to sign with a professional team this season, the NFL reversed course Monday, telling teams Harris is an eligible free agent.
The league reportedly sent a memo to all 32 teams announcing that news, per NFL Network.
Harris and tight end Dae'Quan Wright found themselves the subject of controversy in September, when both men attempted to join Lane Kiffin at LSU despite spending time with NFL teams over the summer.
After going undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, Harris signed a deal with the New Orleans Saints. He was waived by the team in August, however. Wright spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns before he was waived in late August.
With their NFL futures in jeopardy, Harris and Wright decided to see if they were eligible for a fifth year of college so they could play for LSU. That kicked off multiple contentious back-and-forths between Harris, Wright, LSU, the SEC and the NCAA.
In the end, LSU decided it wasn't worth risking the ire of the SEC and left both Harris and Wright off its roster.
Jaguars starting left tackle Anton Harrison will reportedly undergo knee surgery, per NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Jeremy Fowler.
Harrison could be out anywhere from 3-5 weeks or 3-4 months, depending on the surgeon's findings. A 3-4 month absence would end his 2026 season — a brutal blow for Jacksonville, which started the season 4-1 with a two-game lead in the AFC South.
The Jaguars selected Harrison in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and he's been a starter for the team ever since. He made the transition from right tackle to left tackle this season, where he originally played at OU.
Swing tackle Walker Little played left tackle after Harrison exited with the injury in Week 5 and will presumably get his first start of the season in his absence.
"The people's elbow" is back. Or, at least it's no longer the subject of the NFL's ire.
The NFL on Tuesday rescinded two $14,926 fines for Ja'Marr Chase after the All-Pro Cincinnati Bengals receiver appealed the discipline of his touchdown celebration from a Week 2 game against the Houston Texans.
Per the letter from the NFL appeals office, as reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Chase argued in his appeal that the league is "assuming the worst of him and his teammate without discussion with the NFLPA."
"On appeal, Mr. Chase … further contended that even if he committed the violation, his fine should be reduced because he received no warning that this was not allowed. "He added that this is a new celebration with his teammate and that it is not offensive. Mr. Chase finally stated that the NFL is assuming the worst of him and his teammate without discussing with the NFLPA."
Here's the celebration that got Chase in trouble. He caught a touchdown against the Texans, then stood up in the end zone and extended his right arm straight down from an angled position.
As some speculated, the Los Angeles Rams are making a change at kicker after a disastrous evening in Week 5, reportedly set to release kicker Harrison Mevis, per NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo. They are signing Blake Grupe off the New York Jets' practice squad in his place.
Head coach Sean McVay openly voiced his frustrations with Mevis after the game, saying they would "evaluate everything" after Mevis missed a 50-yard field goal on the Rams' opening drive. Then, the would-be game-winning attempt from 48 yards was blocked in overtime.
Mevis, 24, joined the Rams last season but has struggled this year, making just five of nine field goal attempts (55.6%), with misses from 43, 48 (twice) and 50 yards.
After spending his first two-plus seasons with the Saints, he was released in November 2025 after making 18 of 26 field goal attempts. The Indianapolis Colts signed him to their practice squad, and he went 11 for 11 on field goals over five games to close out the season, including a 60-yard game-winner.
The New England Patriots are expected to be without running back TreVeyon Henderson for some time after he suffered a high ankle sprain during Sunday's win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter , Henderson, who ran for 22 yards on 4 carries and made 1 reception for 16 yards, could miss "multiple" weeks, but will not require surgery to repair the ankle.
Henderson suffered the injury following an 11-yard run early in the second quarter. He came up limping and was eventually ruled out for the rest of the game midway through the third quarter.
Henderson wasn't the only Patriot to go down in Week 5. Left tackle Will Campbell suffered a knee sprain two plays before Henderson was injured. He was also ruled out of the game in the third quarter and his injury is to the same knee where he tore his MCL last season.
The Minnesota Vikings worked out receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster on Monday, The Ringer's Tom Pelissero reported .
Smith-Schuster, 29, played last season with the Kansas City Chiefs, recording 33 receptions for 345 yards and 1 touchdown in 17 games (12 starts).
Jordan Addison missed the Vikings' Week 5 23-13 win over the New Orleans Saints with a hamstring injury. Justin Jefferson was questionable with an ankle injury last week, but played against the Saints and tallied 6 catches for 79 yards and a TD.
The Dallas Cowboys have the NFL's second-worst defense in total yards allowed (1,977) and yards per game (395.7).
In hopes of helping improve that unit, the team is adding veteran defensive coach Mike Pettine to the staff to work with defensive coordinator Christian Parker. He will be a senior defensive assistant, head coach Brian Schottenheimer announced.
"He's a front-seven expert," Schottenheimer said of Pettine. "A guy with that type of experience, he's done it all and that's what I like about him.
Pettine, 60, has coached in the NFL since 2002 with stints as a DC with the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers. He was also the Cleveland Browns' head coach for two seasons from 2014-15.
Parker worked under Pettine with the Packers from 2019-20. When he was hired by the Cowboys as DC before this season, he attempted to hire Pettine.
San Francisco wideout Deeb Samuel left Sunday's win over Seattle with a hamstring injury.
The wide receiver is now expected to miss "a few weeks" with the injury. It isn't expected to sideline him for long, but it will depend on how well he heals and whether he suffers any setbacks that affect how much time he misses.
Ravens QB Lamar Jackson missed the team's overtime win against the Falcons in Week 5.
To open Week 6, head coach Jesse Minter mentioned that Jackson is 'definitely doing better.'
The Ravens hope to learn more about his recovery from his sprained ankle by mid-week, but Minter said he doesn't yet know whether the QB will practice on Wednesday.
The Baltimore head coach also said, "He's doing everything he can to get back out there."
Cleveland Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger and running back Quinshon Judkins are "day-to-day" with ankle injuries, head coach Todd Monken told reporters on Monday. Neither player has been ruled out for the Browns' Week 6 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens.
Schwesinger, 23, sustained a Grade 1 ankle sprain during Cleveland's 17-12 loss to the New York Jets, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport . However, he continued playing in the game and had a strip-sack of quarterback Geno Smith when the Browns were clinging to a 2-point lead. He had 8 tackles in the game.
Judkins, 22, suffered a "tweak" to his ankle against the Jets, according to Monken. Yet like Schwesinger, Judkins was wearing a walking boot after the game. He rushed for 44 yards on 14 carries and has not rushed for 100 yards in any of Cleveland's five games this season.
This past summer, Packers linebacker Micah Parsons had the team's Week 6 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys circled on his calendar as a motivator for his return.
The reasoning is obvious: he began his career in Dallas and was traded to Green Bay before last season.
On Monday, it was reported that the Packers don't expect Parsons to return to practice this week, as he is still recovering from the knee injury he suffered last season. Green Bay still doesn't have clarity on when he will return, but hope it is sometime in October.
Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters that starting running back David Montgomery is 'week-to-week.'
The veteran back is dealing with a groin injury that he sustained in the Week 5 win over the Titans. If he misses any time, backup RB Woody Marks is expected to see more work.
Deebo Samuel went down in Sunday's win over the Seahawks. It was a hamstring injury, and we was quickly ruled out.
Samuel will have an MRI Monday, and there is concern that a player of his skill can really be hampered by a hamstring issue.
Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Javon Hargrave is expected to miss the rest of the 2026 season after reportedly tearing his Achilles, according to ESPN.
Hargrave sustained the injury during the team's blowout win over the Chicago Bears in Week 5.
Through four games, Hargrave registered six combined tackles and two quarterback hits this season.
The Patriots play two games in the next 11 days and are dealing with two notable injuries.
Offensive tackle Will Campbell is thought to have sprained his knee, but further tests on Monday will confirm.
Running back TreVeyon Henderson is also dealing with an ankle injury. No one knows how severe it is yet, and he will also have tests on Monday to determine, though it isn't expected to be long-term at this point.
The Green Bay Packers suffered another big-time loss on defense Sunday, with defensive tackle Javon Hargrave feared to have suffered a torn Achilles in their Week 5 win over the Chicago Bears.
It's yet another hit to their defensive depth, just one week after linebacker Edgerrin Cooper suffered a torn Achilles of his own.
The San Francisco 49ers are down another key offensive weapon … but still came out victorious in Seattle.
Wide receiver Deebo Samuel left Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks with a hamstring injury in the second half and was quickly ruled out for the rest of the game.
The injury took place in the third quarter as Samuel ran around the edge on a first-down play. As he collapsed, he dropped the ball and fell prone on the field.
It was a frightening moment as Samuel's condition wasn't initially clear. He was able to eventually stand up and limp off the field.
But he clearly wasn't right and clutched his right thigh as he made his way to the sideline. The 49ers announced minutes later that he'd been ruled out of the game with a hamstring injury .
The 49ers will host the Commanders in Week 6.
