Ye going to trial in $1M Malibu mansion case: What to know

Nearly three years after selling his Malibu mansion,Yeis heading to court over the renovation process for the multimillion-dollar property.

USA TODAY

The Grammy-winning rapper andcontroversial figure, formerly known asKanye West, is going to trial this week after a former employee, Tony Saxon, sued the rapper in September 2023 for various labor abuses while working on his Southern California home.

Three months later, Yeput the beachfront residence up for sale, two years after he paid $57 million for it. The property, designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, includes 4,000 square feet of interior space and about 1,500 square feet of outdoor living areas, and nearly every room has views of the Pacific Ocean.

Around 200 tons of concrete, 200 tons of steel reinforcement and 12 massive pylons were used to construct the home, according to the property's description.

Ye attends the 67th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Feb. 2, 2025.

"Selling Sunset"starJason Oppenheimlisted the mansion for $53 million, which made for a $4 million loss for Ye. The real-estate broker said the new price reflected the property's value after the rapper removed the home's interiors.

According toRealtor.com, the property returned to the market last August after real-estate developer Steven "Bo" Belmont purchased the home for $21 million and later relisted the home for $39 million, reportedly cutting a short-lived deal with luxury home developer Andrew Mazzella at one point.

"Tony has been waiting two-and-a-half years for his day in court, and he's looking forward to telling his story," Saxon's attorney, Neama Rahmani, said in a statement to USA TODAY. "The public will be able to draw their own conclusions as to who is telling the truth."

USA TODAY has reached out to Ye's representatives for comment.

Here's everything you need to know about the case.

West also caused controversy in May 2018 when in an interview with TMZ, the rapper said slavery was "a choice." In June 2018, he released his eighth studio album, "Ye." In January 2018, Ye's family expanded with the arrival of Chicago West, born by surrogate.  In November 2016, Ye abruptly canceled the remainder of his concert tour and reportedly sought treatment for exhaustion at UCLA Medical Center. Ye embarked on an eye-popping concert tour in 2016 featuring a groundbreaking floating stage. Ye and Kim Kardashian haven't shielded their kids from the spotlight. Daughter North has been a frequent fixture with her parents at fashion shows. Son Saint was born in December 2015. Ye earned a new nickname with the release of his sixth album, "Yeezus," in 2013. Even though record sales weren't high at first, it marked Kanye's seventh platinum record. When did the Kim and Ye romance begin? Kanye rapped, “I fell in love with Kim" on "Cruel Summer," a 2012 compilation album. This time marked the beginning of his much-talked-about romance with the most famous Kardashian. Ye showed off more than his vocal chords in 2011, when he debuted his dw line at Paris Fashion Week. Some of Ye's earliest songs highlighted his melodic rap style. With Auto-Tuned rhymes, he bared his soul in chart-topping 2008 songs like "Heartless" and "Love Lockdown." His 2007 hit "Stronger" was born from Kanye's collaboration with Daft Punk during a time when he experimented with electronic beats, not to mention those iconic shutter shades.

Why is Ye being sued for Malibu mansion?

In his lawsuit against Ye, Saxon accused the rapper, as well as 10 anonymous "Doe" defendants, of disability discrimination, violations of multiple labor codes, unpaid wages and reimbursements, and wrongful retaliatory termination.

Saxon said he began working on Ye's Malibu home around September 2021 after being hired as a "project manager" for the property's renovations, a position that required him to be a "full-time security" and "live-in caretaker." His duties, totaling 16-hour workdays, included cleaning construction and demolition work, coordinating workers and hiring contractors.

The former employee also detailed the "dangerous working conditions" he and his coworkers navigated, including sleeping arrangements located near open insulation and a lack of safety equipment for demolition work. Saxon provided several photos and videos allegedly showing these conditions, according to court documents reviewed by USA TODAY.

Saxon alleged he shared his complaints about the unsafe working environment with Ye on "numerous occasions," but the rapper allegedly took no action.

Former Ye employee says he was fired over renovation dispute

Around November 2021, Saxon allegedly injured his back "severely" while working on the project. Although he reported the injury to Ye and requested time off to rest, Saxon said the Yeezy founder ignored his request.

That same month, Saxon was terminated from his project manager role after he said he refused to comply with Ye's "dangerous" demand to remove "all of the electricity and windows from the house."

"'If you don't do what I say, you're not going to work for me,'" Ye reportedly told Saxon, according to the lawsuit. "'I'm not going to be your friend anymore, and you'll just see me on TV."

Katie Couric on Doing JFK Jr.'s Final TV Interview

A couple of months before his July 1999 death, I sat down with John F. Kennedy Jr. on theTODAYShow for what would turn out to be his last TV interview. Now thatJohn and his wife Carolyn Bessetteare the subjects of a splashy new TV series,Love Storyon FX, I'm recalling what it was like to sit down with him for a conversation so many years ago.

Katie Couric Media Katie Couric on Doing JFK Jr.'s Final TV Interview

When we decided to try to interview him for the show, I was so excited — because, like so many others, I had a crush on him. I had followed his career and was so thrilled to be featured on the cover of his brash upstart politics magazine,George, in May 1997. (I have a huge poster of that cover in my basement. Sometimes I look at it, and it feels like a lifetime ago — when my hair was very, very brown.)

An NBC colleague and friend Lori Beecher and I met John at Michael's restaurant in Midtown to try to make the interview happen. Michael's is a popular lunch hotspot for the media crowd, but we picked it for a breakfast rendezvous. John ordered cereal with fruit. I clearly remember that they gave him cornflakes with honeydew sliced up on top of it. We all laughed and thought that was super bizarre.

Growing up, "Camelot" had such a hold on the public's imagination. The image of "John John" as a three-year-old saluting his father's casket was seared into the American consciousness. AfterJFK's assassination, everyone seemed to be looking for someone to recapture the spirit of the young, athletic, vibrant Kennedy family. To many, John seemed to be the embodiment of that potential and people couldn't seem to get enough of him, especially as he grew into a handsome young man.

I always felt a lot of sympathy for him. Imagine the public humiliation he experienced when he was mercilessly mocked for not passing the bar exam — not once, but twice. The expectations that were thrust upon him just by virtue of his name were so enormous, but somehow he pulled it off so gracefully.

On the day of our interview, he rode his bike to the studio at 30 Rock, which was pretty typical for him. Speaking with John on camera, he was kind, self-effacing, and surprisingly open. When I had interviewed his sister Caroline, she seemed much more guarded and less relaxed. But John spoke freely about a lot of very personal things, from his relationship with his mother to whether he thought his father would be proud of his career.

I'll never forget when, two months later, on a Saturday in July 1999,my late sister Emilycalled me to say that John had been in a plane crash. It reminded me of how I felt when Princess Diana was killed in that terrible accident just two years earlier — they were both global icons who we lost too soon. I often wonder what both would be doing now.

Any time I go to Nantucket, I think about him flying over the same waters and plunging into the Atlantic along with his young wife and her sister. Three lives ended that night — deeply heartbreaking for their families. But for the country at large, the hope and promise of Camelot seemed to be extinguished for good.

E.U. Reportedly Set to Freeze U.S. Trade Deal Approval

The European Union is reportedly preparing to halt the ratification process of its trade agreement with the U.S. as it seeks more information on the Trump Administration's new plans regarding tariffs.

Zeljana Zovko, the lead trade negotiator in the European People's Party group, is quoted as tellingBloomberg"we have no other option" but to delay the approval process while seeking clarity.

TIME has reached out to Zovko for confirmation and further comment.

The reports from Europe come after President Donald Trump over the weekendthreatenedto impose a 15% global tariff, by way of a response to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling his sweeping tariffs are illegal on Friday. The Court argued that Trump cannot rely on the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose such charges.

"During the next short number of months, the Trump Administration will determine and issue the new and legally permissible tariffs," said Trump of the new hike.

The U.S. President raised the number from his 10% threat in the immediate aftermath of the ruling on Friday. He invoked his authority underSection 122of the Trade Act of 1974 whenannouncingthe levies.

Trump's promise of a new tariff program has brought into question the foundation of theU.S.–E.U. agreementreached in July 2025, which proposed a 15% import tax on most European goods entering the U.S., the elimination of tariffs on American industrial exports to the bloc, and an intention from the E.U. to purchase $750 billion in U.S. energy.

Zovkoexpressedconcerns Sunday morning, saying: "Without full legal clarity regarding the newly-announced tariffs, particularly in light of the Supreme Court decision, we cannot take any abrupt decisions."

"Without a detailed assessment of the situation, its legal implications and its economic impact, it would be irresponsible to react prematurely," she added. "We will continue to closely monitor developments and remain focused on our objective, which has not changed from the beginning: restoring stability and predictability to our trade relations."

The uncertainty prompted senior E.U. officials to call for an emergency meeting Monday to reassess the transatlantic deal.

Bernd Lange, chair of the European Parliament's trade committee, calledthe situation "pure customs chaos on the part of the U.S. government" andsummoneda meeting to suspend the legislative approval of the deal until there are "comprehensive legal assessment[s] and clear commitments from the U.S. side."

"Don't new tariffs based on Section 122 mean a breach of the deal?" he queried. "Regardless, no one knows whether the USA will adhere to it—or even be able to at all."

A spokesperson for Lange's office told TIME additional updates would follow after Monday's meeting.

The European Commission, which oversees trade policy for the bloc's 27 member states, is also requesting "full clarity" from Washington regarding its next steps on tariffs.

"The current situation is not conducive to delivering 'fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial' transatlantic trade and investment, as agreed to by both sides and spelled out in the E.U.-U.S. Joint Statement of August 2025," thestatementread.

The executive cabinet of the European Union indicated it will not accept an increase in U.S. tariffs, citing the hard-earned existing agreement.

"A deal is a deal. As the United States' largest trading partner, the E.U. expects the U.S. to honour its commitments set out in the Joint Statement—just as the E.U. stands by its commitments," the Commission warned. "In particular, E.U. products must continue to benefit from the most competitive treatment, with no increases in tariffs beyond the clear and all-inclusive ceiling previously agreed."

TIME has reached out to the White House for comment.

The Commission confirmed E.U. Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič had been in contact with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick over the weekend.

When asked onCBS'Face the NationSunday morning whether agreements with the E.U. would remain intact, Greer said they "expect to stand by them."

"I haven't heard anyone yet come to me and say, the deal's off. They want to see how this plays out. I'm in active conversations with them on it," he said.

The E.U.-U.S. agreement was previously brought into question in January afterTrump threatened to tariff European allieswho opposed his campaign toannex Greenland—a threat he has since walked back.
