Driving the No. 7 Chevrolet for Spire Motorsports, Smith made a decisive move on the final lap of overtime to secure the victory in one of the most dramatic finishes of the season. The win was especially significant because it came just hours after Smith announced he would compete full-time in the Truck Series with TRICON Garage in 2027.
Smith appeared to be on the outside looking in during the closing moments, running behind the leaders as Ty Majeski and Kaden Honeycutt battled for the top position. However, a strong push from Tyler Ankrum helped Smith surge forward and make his move coming through the final turns.
Smith powered past the leaders and held on at the finish line, beating Ankrum by just 0.091 seconds. Austin Green finished third, followed by Majeski and Honeycutt.
The victory marked Smith's first Truck Series win in just his 11th career start. He also led a race-high 21 laps, demonstrating the speed of the No. 7 Chevrolet throughout the afternoon.
The race was far from smooth sailing, as Talladega once again delivered the kind of unpredictable action that makes superspeedway racing so entertaining. Multiple cautions and major multi-truck incidents created challenges throughout the event, with several drivers seeing their days end early.
Among those caught in an early crash were NASCAR veteran Tony Stewart and motorsports personality Cleetus McFarland. Both drivers were eliminated from contention following the incident.
Despite the chaos, Smith and his team remained in position to capitalize when the opportunity presented itself. His late charge through the field ultimately made the difference in a finish that featured multiple trucks fighting for the win.
The victory also provides Smith with plenty of momentum heading into the next chapter of his NASCAR career. After spending recent seasons competing full-time in the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, he is preparing to move to TRICON Garage for a full-time Truck Series campaign next season.
Smith will take over the No. 15 Toyota for TRICON in 2027, giving him an opportunity to build on his growing NASCAR résumé while competing for wins on a regular basis.
Winning at Talladega before beginning that new chapter makes Friday's result even more meaningful. Smith has already shown he can compete at the front of the Truck Series field, and his ability to execute under pressure could make him a driver to watch next season.
For now, Smith can celebrate a breakthrough victory that capped off an eventful day and gave him his first Truck Series trophy. With a dramatic last-lap pass and a new full-time opportunity ahead, the Talladega win could be an important milestone in his racing career.
