What to know about Zohran Mamdani's swearing-in ceremony

Zohran Mamdaniwill besworn in as mayor of New York Cityjust after the ball drops in Times Square and will celebrate among his supporters on Jan. 1.

"We're already so heartened with the response from New Yorkers who understand it's not my success, it's our success. It's not my administration, it's our administration. Similarly, it's not my inauguration, it's for all of us," Mamdani told reporters,CBS New Yorkreported.

About 4,000 ticketed guests will witness the public swearing-in at City Hall in New York City, following the official ceremony just after midnight. The ceremony has been dubbed "Inauguration of a New Era."

The ceremony will be flanked by a "Block Party on Broadway" public viewing event that will take place in the Canyon of Heroes along Broadway.

When is Zohran Mamdani being sworn in?

Mamdani will officially be sworn in just after midnight Jan. 1. The public swearing will occur during a ceremony that begins at 1 p.m. ET.

Who will swear Mamdani in?

The midnight oath will be given by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

James, a Democrat, has become a leading figure representing the party's opposition to the Trump administration. She sued Trump in a 2023 civil fraud case andfought now-dismissed chargesfrom the Department of Justice this year.

The public oath will be given by Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Sanders, a Brooklyn native, identifies as a democratic socialist like Mamdani. He's one of the country's most recognizable progressive lawmakers andendorsed Mamdanifor mayor and campaigned for him ahead of his Nov. 4 victory.

In a news release from Mamdani's transition team on Dec. 22, James and Sanders were described as "political inspirations" to the incoming mayor.
